How to Upload Files to Cricut Design Space

Upload your own files to Cricut Design Space for ultimate cutting machine freedom! Learn how in this easy, step-by-step tutorial.

Ultimate Cutting Machine Freedom

If you own a Cricut Explore cutting machine (Explore, Explore Air, Explore Air 2), then you already know Cricut makes a lot of files for you to use with it. But did you know that you can also use non-Cricut files with your machine? Pretty much any files you have, from photos to cutting patterns you design yourself, can be used. They just need to be in SVG, DXF, JPG, PNG, BMP, or GIF format, and you need to upload them to Cricut Design Space first. Isn’t that an awesome feature? It’s definitely one of the top reasons I invested in a Cricut Explore Air — ultimate cutting machine freedom!

How to Upload Files to Cricut Design Space

Uploading your own files to Cricut Design Space is very easy! Here’s a little tutorial to show you how.

First Steps

The first few steps to upload files to Cricut Design Space are the same for all file types:

1. Using the device on which your files are stored, log into your Cricut Design Space account.

2. At the lower left of the Cricut Design Space screen, click the blue “Create New Project” button.

The Upload Images screen opens.

Now you’ll notice in this screen that you can either upload an ‘image’ or a ‘pattern’ fill’. Cricut Design Space considers all SVG and DXF cutting files to be ‘images’. The same is true of any photo, digi stamp, etc. that you plan to use as part of a cutting, scoring, or writing project. ‘Pattern Fill’ files really are something else entirely, so we’ll cover those in a separate tutorial.

4. At the left of the Upload Images screen, under “Image” click the blue “Upload Image” button.

Final Steps by File Type

At this point, the steps will vary depending on what type of file you chose to upload:

  • Follow the directions in section A below to finish uploading SVG or DXF cutting files.
  • To upload JPG, PNG, BMP, and GIF files, follow the directions in section B.

A. Final Steps to Upload SVG and DXF Cutting Files

1. A preview image of the cutting pattern appears on the screen. To the right of the image, type in a name for the file, as well as some tags. A name is required, but tags are also highly recommended.

B. Final Steps to Upload JPG, PNG, BMP, and GIF Files

1. A preview of your image appears on the screen. Now Cricut Design Space needs to know how complex your image is before it can save it. Is it just a simple shape with some basic colors? Is it one that has lots of details and/or color shading? Read the descriptions to the right of the image, and then click the level you feel best matches your image.

TIP: If you’re not sure how complex your image is, try clicking on one of the levels, and then watch what happens to the preview image. If it distorts, then it is more complex than the setting you chose.

2. Next, click the green “Continue” button at the lower right of this screen.
